Many of you have seen my handy little Aiptek Pocket DV2 4-in-1 camera: Takes pictures, records video with audio, records audio only, and can take on responsibility as a webcam as well. What's not to like?
-The images are 1.7MP, and of poor, dim, blue-noise quality.
-Video is 10fps 320x240 resolution.
-Audio doesn't sound like Miracle Ear, instead it sounds like mayonnaise. Also, to record audio only, it takes a good 15 seconds from boot time to navigating the menu to recording the audio (although the boot up time is pretty good)
So it isn't as good at taking pictures as a dedicated camera would, and it isn't as good as taking movies as a regular camcorder, and you might as well buy one of those little audio recorders to be of any use.
With all of these downfalls, why buy one?
-It's cheaper than buying all those things individually.
-It's more convenient than lugging all those things around for spur of the moment occasions.
-It is small.
When I bought this thing over a year and a half ago, it was $140 after shipping and handling. Now its $70. I was just wondering: How much would all that stuff cost if I went the (slightly) higher quality route?
Digital Camera: DXG-308 (3.1 MP) = $70 (newegg.com)
Camcorder: PVC S-VHS-C = $200 (circuitcity.com)
Webcam: Logitech QuickCam Zoom Web Camera (with audio) = $49 (walmart.com)
Digital Audio Recorder: RCA RP5011 Digital Voice Recorder = $30 (walmart.com)
Grand-Total: $349 (no tax)
So there you go. By spending twice as much (and then some)
than the camera itself, I get much better quality than that all-in-one thing. But the camera I have is still ok, the images are webpage worthy, but not something that you'd want for high quality prints. The video is ok for quick internet movies (like a music video!), but not for recording some big event, like a basketball game. The PC camera is right on par with other webcams, its just a nuisance to set up. I never used the audio feature, its that bad (I once used it to record a music event, it recorded about an hour, but it wasn't something that I'd want to listen to).
I must be really bored.
